ARBOVIRUS ISOLATIONS

Methods. Only mosquitoes collected from the inland and from some Sydney sites were processed for viruses. Virus isolation methods are as per the previous annual report (Doggett et al., 2000). Assays can be used to identify any suspected viral isolate, and can identify the alphaviruses - Barmah Forest (BF), Ross River (RR) and Sindbis (SIN), and the flaviviruses - MVE, Kunjin (KUN), Alfuy (ALF), Edge Hill (EH), Kokobera (KOK) and Stratford (STR). Any isolate that was not identified by this assay was labelled as 'unknown'.

Positive results were sent to Dr Jeremy McAnulty of the AIDS and Infectious Disease Branch, NSW Health, and to the relevant Public Health Unit, and posted on the NSW Arbovirus Surveillance Web Site (under ‘Mosquito/Chicken Results’) and under each location.

Results. Of the mosquitoes processed, there were 44 viral isolates. These are listed in Table 1.
