2000 -2001 Annual Report

HUMAN NOTIFICATIONS

Despite the MVE activity in the north inland regions of the state, there were no human cases reported for NSW. Serological confirmation of a case of MVE infection (acquired in the NT) in a tourist who presented with severe encephalitis after return to Europe was undertaken at the ICPMR. One KUN infection without clinical disease was recorded from southern inland (L. Hueston & D. Dwyer unpubl. data).

Tables 4 and 5 contain the number of laboratory notifications of human RR and BF infections by Area Health Service (AHS) for NSW. Note that these are laboratory notifications based on a single IgM positive specimen, and may not always represent infections from this season, as IgM may persist for long periods. In addition to the above tables, there were 29 unspecified arbovirus notifications. The total number of arbovirus notifications for the period July 2000 to June 2001 was 1,221 and this was above the average for the previous five seasons of 1,117. Cases across the inland were down upon recent years, whereas numbers of human reports along the coast had risen. The mid-north coast again had the highest number of cases for any area health service in NSW. Notifications for the north coast this season were double the recent average and were due mainly to a major BF epidemic with some 307 reports. There was also a dramatic jump in cases, due to RR, in the Western Sydney region.
