· All current forms of surveillance need to be operated in the northern localities, in the event that MVE is reintroduced via viraemic migratory birds from endemic regions of the north.
· Routine mosquito trapping with virus isolation should be undertaken in all those locations that demonstrated flavivirus activity during the 2000-2001 season, in case MVE has over-wintered in the mosquitoes or by other means.
· For those northern localities that trapped irregularly during 2000-2001, the monitors need to be encouraged to trap on a weekly basis, so MVE can be detected as early as possible.
· A heightened level of public awareness of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases should be made prior to the start of the next season.
·
Mosquito trapping and virus isolation should be conducted over several weeks when environmental conditions are conducive for high mosquito populations in those regions that currently are not a part of the NSW Arbovirus Surveillance Program.
